I bought this book because I was very unhappy with the treatment my Dr. had given me. After being given the "correct" dosage of Synthroid I still had every symptom except for depression. After reading this book I went back to my Dr. with more knowledge than he had about the subject. He agreed to let me try a different medication. I am in the process of being "weaned" off Synthroid so that I can try a different medication. This book is ACES! The author is completely unprejudiced regarding treatment, but does stress NOT to give up until you feel satisfied with the way you feel! Thumbs up for Mary Shomon for all the research she has done. Buy the book-you won't be disappointed. And, there was not a thing to dislike about this book. Easy to read and understand.
I have had hypothyroidism for 12 years. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and was given radioactive iodine to "kill" part of my thyroid. I have been on the same does of Synthroid the entire time. My yearly blood tests have always been in the "normal" range, but I have never felt "normal." This book has made me realize that - despite what the lab/doctor says - if I don't feel right someone needs to try something different. I will be going to my doctor soon and if she doesn't agree that a higher dose of Synthroid might help me, I will be looking for another doctor. This book is SO FULL of information that the doctors have never bothered to let me know. Ms. Shomon has inspired me to learn as much about this condition as I can because if I don't educate myself, no one else will. God knows there are doctors out there who need to be educated by their patients! This book is a MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WITH ANY THYROID ISSUE.Read full review
A good book on understanding hypothyroidism. There are many I would recommend and this is one. Anyone with hypothyroidism should educate themselves, dont depend on doctors totally. The thyroid is complex in ways and is the engine of the whole system. Its very important to the workings of the body and the mind. Many doctors seem so behind on new information, TSH testing, natural thyroid, etc. And they are close minded, arrogant and think you are a know it all. (Actually no one knows their own body and what it feels like and what is working or not working than yourself!) I dont think they continue to keep up with thyroid learning past medical school so you have to study it for yourself. (Yes, I understand they are busy!) Stop the thyroid change and Stop the thyroid Madness are also good sources for helping yourself (and doctors) So many people are not treated adequately for their thyroid and continue to suffer so I read. Knowledge is power.Read full review

For vwrrwe understanding the condition of hypothyroidism. A good doctor doesn't treat lab results but rather sees the whole picture. This will help you understand what it is.

Just getting started on reading this book but so far it seems to be highly informative and well written. I'm glad Ms. Shomon is not JUST quoting the medical establishment (although she does) and has done research to find natural solutions that may side step the pill-popping prescription drug mentality of many of todays MD's. Highly recommended!
