There are a few subjects that have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. The 1862 Andrews Raid, also known as The Great Locomotive Chase, is one such subject. Okay, the raid failed and the effect on the Civil War had the raid succeeded is debatable. There were other raids and skirmishes of a similar nature. But this one . . . what nerve! On both sides! I have read a ton of material on the Andrews raid over the years. This book is the top of the heap, period. The subject matter has been exhaustively researched and compiled in a very readable format. I truly had trouble putting the book down, so well is it written. I would recommend this book to my wife, who is not a hardcore history fan. The flow of the text is such that she would enjoy it and keep track of the various stories as they are discussed. I must say I have no real dislikes about the book. Perhaps it could have had some "new" photos--but there aren't any, so far as we know. So we must deal with what we have. Mr Bonds did a true service to the subject matter. Having written an award winning history term paper in college, I can appreciate the depth of his research and his presentation. If you have an interest in the Andrews Raid, the American Civil War [the Wah of Nawthun Aggreshun], early railroad operations, or American military history, this book is a must-read. I cannot recommend it more highly. Mr Bonds has another book out, also dealing with the Civil War. I will likely buy and read it, even though its subject matter is outside my normal interests. His writing is that much of a pleasure to read.Read full review
