Excerpt from Addresses Delivered and Papers Read Before the Minisink Valley Historical Society: At Their Annual and Semi-Annual Meetings; February 22nd, and July 22nd, 1896 Introductory remarks in part by the President of the Society: After alluding to the. Assembling of the Society at the place Of its first midsummer meeting and where it met for five successive years, and extending a cor dial greeting to all who were present, he stat-ed that the object of the Society was patriotic as well as his toric. It is expressly stated in its constitution that one of its objects will be to encourage a patriotic sentiment. The times fixed for the two stated meet ings of the Society are well adapted to promote this object. The annual meeting is 011 the 22d Of February, the birthday of the immortal 'ashington, and can never be Observed without bringing before the mind of every true American the name of one who stands out in all history as an example of all that is best and ble-st in patriotic virtue. Our semi-annual meeting on July 22d reminds us Of the heroic deeds of the people of this valley and of the surrounding country, who on this dav, 117 years ago, inspired by loftiest patriotism, rose up in defence of their homes and liberties, which had been ruthless ly invaded by a savage foe, and sacrificed all that was dear to them that themselves, their wives and children might dwell in peace and security. In this deadly con ict, in which one-half of the patriot band fell before a foe far surpassing them in number, were performed deeds of valor and heroism which should cause their names to be held in grateful remembrance by coming generations.
