Excerpt from Votes and Proceedings of the Nineteenth General Assembly of the State of New-Jersey: Trenton, Tuesday, October 28, 1794 The House proceeded to the Choice of a Speaker, and the Horable Silas Condict, Esquire, was unanimously elected, and placed in the Chair. The House proceeded to the Election of a Clerk, when Maskell Ewing was unanimously elected. Maskell Ewing attended, and being duly sworn, took his Seat as Clerk of the House. Resolved, That David Wrighter be Door-keeper of the House during the present Sitting. Ordered, That Mr. Anderson do wait on the Council and acquaint them that the House of Assembly have, this Day, proceeded to Business, and have chosen the, Horable Silas Condict, Esquire, their Speaker. Ordered, That Messrs. Elmer, Vredenburgh, and Southard be a Committee to prepare and report Rules and Regulations for the Government of the House. Ordered, That Mesrs. Blackwood, Manning, and De Vroom be a Committee to inspect the Minutes of the two last Sittings, and report such Business as stands referred, or remains unfinished from the last Session. Ordered, That Messrs. Blackwood, Whitall, and Clement be a Committee to prepare and report a Bill for the Amendment of the General Election Law. Mr. Anderson reported, that he had obeyed the Order of the House. The House adjourned to Three o'Clock P.M. Richard Townsend and David Johnson, returned as Representatives for the County of Cape-May; Aaron Kitchel, Esquire, as a Representative for the County of Morris; Joseph Stillwell, Esquire, as a Representative for the County of Monmouth; Eleazer Mayhew, Esquire, as one of the Representatives of the County of Salem; and Benjamin Blachlidge, Esquire, as one of the Representatives of the County of Bergen, appeared in the House, and produced the respective Certificates of their Elections, which were read, approved, and ordered to be filed. Whereupon, being duly qualified by the Speaker, they look their Seats in the House. Mr. Condit, from Council, informed the House, that a sufficient Number of Members of Council have met, elected the Horable Thomas Henderson, Esquire, Vice-President, and proceeded to Business. Mr. Elmer, from the Committee appointed for that Purpose, reported Rules and Regulations for the Government of the House, which were read and agreed to. A Petition from Jacob Kerr, of the County of Sussex, praying, for Reasons therein contained, that a Law may pass to divorce him from Mercy his Wife, was read with sundry Affidavits, and ordered a second Readings. Mr. Blackwood, from the Committee appointed to inspect the Minutes of the two last Sittings, and report such Business as stands referred, or remains unfinished from the last Session, reported as follows - viz. 1. The Act. to prescribe the Form of the Oath to be taken by Jurors. Ordered a second Reading. 2. The Petition from Morris and Somerset, reported on by Mr. Kitchel, on the 20th February last.
