Excerpt from Manual of the First Congregational Church, Vol. 2: Burlington; Vermont, 1867 The Town of Burlington was chartered in June, 1763. The first settlement was commenced in it about the Year 1775, but was mainly abandoned during the war of our Revolution. In the spring of 1783 nine or ten families came from Connecticut, and effected a more permanent and flourishing settlement. From 1783 to 1800, the population increased from about 40 persons to 600. During this period, the ministrations of the gospel were seldom enjoyed, except through the labors of occasional missionaries. Notwithstanding the increase of population, and the prosperous state of the settlement, church was organized before the year 1805. During the autumn of 1804, several persons became specially interested in the spiritual wants of the town. The public worship of God on the Sabbath, had indeed been partially sustained in the College Chapel, for some time previous to 1804. But this was t eugh. The people needed a more effective preaching of the gospel, by the influence and example of a Christian Church and Pastor.
