Excerpt from A Journal of the Proceedings of the Legislative-Council of the State of New-Jersey: Trenton, Tuesday, October 22, 1782 Elijah Clark, Esq. produced a Certificate of his being duly elected a Member of Council for the County of Gloucester, which was read, and he took and subscribed the Oaths required by Law, before John Fell, Esq. one of the Members returned for this House, and took his Seat in Council; Ephraim Martin, John Fell, Theophilus Elmer, John Carle, Joseph Reading, John Cox, and Josiah Hornblower Esquires, severally produced Certificates of their being duly elected as Members of this House, which were read, and they thereupon took and subscribed the Oaths required by Law before Elijah Clark, Esq. one of the Members of this House, and took their Seats in Council. John Beatty Esq. produced a Certificate of his being duly elected a Member of this House, which was read, and he thereupon took and subscribed the Oaths required by Law before John Cox, Esq. one of the Members of this House, and took his Seat in Council. The House adjourned to Three o'Clock in the Afteron. The House met. The Hourable John Cox, Esq. was elected Vice-President of the Council, pursuant to the Constitution; whereupon he took the Oath of Office, and was seated in the Chair accordingly. Bowes Reed, Esq. was unanimously elected Clerk of the Council, and took the Oath of Office accordingly. Ordered, That Mr. Fell do wait on the House of Assembly, and acquaint them that a Quorum of the Council have this Day met, elected the Hourable John Cox, Esq. Vice-President, and proceeded to Business. The House adjourned till Ten o'Clock To-morrow Morning. Friday, October 25, 1782. The House met. Present, His Excellency the Goverr, and as before. The House adjourned to Three o'Clock in the Afteron. The House met. The House adjourned till To-morrow Morning Ten o'Clock, Saturday, October 26, 1782. The House met - Present as before. A Message from the House of Assembly by Mr. Camp, dated Yesterday, in the Words following: 'Ordered, 'That Mr. Camp do wait on the Council, and acquaint them that the House of Assembly have this Day proceeded to Business and have chosen the Hourable Ephraim Harris, Esq. their Speaker.'
