Excerpt from Calendar of Letter-Books: Preserved Among the Archives of the Corporation of the City of London at the Guildhall Letter-Book D - formerly kwn as the Red Book (liter Rubens) from the colour of its original binding - strictly speaking, embraces a period of more than six years, viz., 1309-1314, although it furnishes us with a record of the elections of various Mayors and Sheriffs and other matters of a somewhat later date, as well as with the forms of the several oaths administered to various municipal officers in or about the fifteenth century. The main feature of the volume is the record of admissions to the freedom of the City by''redemption between 1309 and 1312, as well as of the binding and discharge of apprentices (or the same period.' This is the earliest record of its kind extant among the City's archives. In the Town Clerk's custody there is a book of recognizance of those admitted to the freedom by redemption between 1666 and 1675, and six volumes of accounts of money received on such admissions between 1694 and 1757, but thing of an earlier date; whilst the earliest original documents relating to the freedom of the City preserved in the Chamberlain's office date from 1681.
