Excerpt from The Prose Dramas of Henrik Ibsen: New and Revised Edition Ten years have passed since the publication of the collected edition, in five volumes, Henrik Ibsen's Prose Dramas. The translations, for all of which 1 was responsible, whether as actual translator, or as reviser and editor, have met with more praise, perhaps, than they deserved, and with very little censure. Far be it from me to decry them. They have served their purpose tolerably well, and compare t unfavourably. I am told, with-the French and German versions of the same plays. Nevertheless I have long felt that there was, in all of them, ample room for improvement. While they have in case, I hope, seriously misrepresented the poets meaning, they have done some injustice to his manner. Even sympathetic critics of Ibsen lay it down as a mere truism that he has style, merit of verbal form. Now, this is a grave error.
