A History of the Protestant Reformation in England and Ireland was authored by William Cobbett. Cobbett was the son of a farmer, a champion of rural English life, and one of the most influential journalists of the day. This work sees Cobbett explore the reformation and its outcomes in great detail, and with a personal investment rarely found in history texts. Although a Protestant himself, Cobbett's central thesis in A History of Protestant Reformation in England and Ireland is that the changes brought upon by the Protestant Reformation had a negative impact on daily life in England and Ireland. This is an account of Henry VIII's rule, the wastefulness of his government, the greed of his political allies, and the terrible deeds done to the common citizen as a direct result of the Reformation. Corbett also builds a connection between the Protestant Reformation and the American Revolution, arguing that the Lords who came to power during this period of great change were the same Lords that revolutionaries sought to separate from. The author's evidence is convincing and personal throughout. The book is written in a casual style, structured as a series of letters to the reader. While Cobbett writes in a persuasive tone, he does give equal credence to the flip side of his argument, and examines the Catholic revolts against the Protestants in great detail.
