The late Eric Dolphy remains a pivotal figure in modern jazz history. A brilliant, edgy player of alto sax, flute, and bass clarinet, Dolphy was a forward-thinking composer and performer even while his work was marked by a strong sense of structure and swing. CONVERSATIONS was recorded in 1963 with a cast of then up-and-coming jazz players, including trumpeter Woody Shaw and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. The four compositions are lengthy and vibrantly lyrical, and feature dazzling solos, especially from Dolphy who strove to make his alto sax as voice-like as possible.
