250 W Electric Bicycles

Electric bicycles, or e-bikes as they are also known, are ideal for commuting around cities and much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than travelling by car. They're also great for hilly terrain, long rides and for people with low fitness levels, as the motor can make travelling uphill or while tired much easier. A variety of frame styles and sizes is available, including small e-bikes suitable for short city trips and electric mountain bikes. Some look very similar to conventional road bikes, while others have a moped-style look. There are even foldable models, which are compact for transporting in a car or on public transport. Electric scooters are another option.

Types

There are two main types of e-bike available: pedal assist and power on demand. Pedal assist e-bikes are also called pedelecs. Their motors provide assistance only when the cyclist is pedalling and cut out when the speed reaches 25 km/h. With power on demand electric bikes, the motor is operated manually using a throttle, which is commonly located on the handgrip. You can ride these e-bikes as a normal bike without power assistance, by both pedal and motor power, or by motor power alone.

Power Options and Speed

E-bikes have a range of power options available. Pedelecs have a limit of 250 W. 350 W electric bicycles are also quite common however; even 1,000 W options are available. E-bikes can reach speeds of around 25 to 30 km/h under battery power.

Battery and Range

Several types of rechargeable batteries are available for electric bicycles. Many e-bikes use lithium-ion batteries, while other options include nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride. Batteries generally take between two and six hours to charge. The battery’s amp hours (AmH) determines an e-bike’s range, with the terrain also being a contributing factor. In general, you can expect to travel 20 to 80 km, depending on the size of the battery.

Wheel and Frame Size

As with conventional bicycles, e-bikes come in varying wheel and frame sizes. 26-inch wheel electric bicycles are the most common, though many of the smaller folding models have wheels between 14 and 20 inches. As for size, a 26-inch frame electric bicycle is the most common size for adults.
