In 1991, after an underperforming movie sequel to Purple Rain (Gravity Bridge) and years of conflicts over art vs. commerce, Warner Records were starting to wonder if the Prince investment, despite how it had paid off for them, might not be worth the hassle of dealing with the mercurial artist's demands. Diamond and Pearls was Prince's concession to WB, a proof of concept that showed he could still write a Top 40 hit album in his sleep, if he was properly motivated to. The album remains an artistic achievement almost unrivalled even within its context in one of the most vital and important times for pop music. Collected here are all the promotional videos (incl. Diamonds and Pearls, Insatiable (personal favourite), Gett Off and others, plus live footage and behind-the-scenes interviews w/Prince's band at the time, The New Power Generation. A must-have for fans of Prince and of great pop music w/substance over style (though still PLENTY of that too!)Read full review
