This work, devoted to optical fibres, is primarily concerned with industrial applications in order to acquaint engineers with the technology and the associated optics and electronics. No particular knowledge is required with the exception of a sound mathematical background. Three industrial aspects of fibres are considered. These are fabrication, interfacing and applications. The first three chapters present the fibre from a theoretical point of view. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 describe the fabrication of fibres and the monitoring techniques used to check the parameter values. Chapters 7, 8, 9 and 10 describe interfaces and telecommunications applications particularly by developing the transmitting, receiving and coupling aspects. The last chapter presents opitical fibre applications in an industrial environment with emphasis on transmission and an explanation of the basic methodology required for evaluation of fibre optic links. A large part of this chapter is also devoted to fibre optic transducers.
